Wish You Were Here – South West Printmakers

October 31, 2009 at 11:57 am (Member news, Print News, Printmaking events in Perth)

South West Printmakers are happy to present their latest exhibition, entitled Wish You Were Here which will open at Bunbury Regional Art Galleries on Friday 6 November at 7pm. All are welcome to attend.

The exhibition consists of new print media works and the group’s annual print exchange which this year explores the format of the postcard.

“As a universally accepted form of communication, the postcard is bound in both friendship and the notion of space and place, this print share has undoubtedly been a journey in itself. Over the past few months, as each treasure has dropped unexpectedly into our lives, one cannot understate the joy and delight at receiving these individual postcards and their messages of humour and goodwill. We hope you will enjoy them as much as we have.”  South West Printmakers 2009.

Bunbury Regional Art Galleries is situated at 64 Wittenoom Street, Bunbury and is open daily from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free. Wish You Were Here will run until 10 January 2010.

It was a big night at the City of Swan’s Art Awards with a record number of entries and a turn out to match.

PAWA members were well represented among the entrants but the print excitement of the event goes to Hannah Jackson, a young printmaker, who received the Local Artist Award for her silkscreen  Graffiti. The judges remarked in their comments that Graffiti “shows a variety and confidence in the printmaking technique – an artform that needs a rebirth. This artwork doesn’t hide the traditions of printmaking and is a lovely clean image.” Well done Hannah.

PAWA members showing prints included Rosemary Mostyn with a collagraph titled Sands of Time IV; Shelley Cowper with her etching Dissecting the Landscape and Patricia Cox. Other media shown by our members Aloma Berg is showing an encaustic painting called Salmon Gums, Willemina Foeken with a pastel titled Banksias & Kangaroo Paws, while a newer member Denise Brown is showing an untitled charcoal drawing. Amanda Williams assisted Janis Nedela with curation and also spoke about the curating on opening night.

The City of Swan Awards exhibition run until 8th November at the Midland Town Hall.
Opening times: 10am to 4pm daily.

With members residing throughout the south west, in towns such as Bridgetown, Dardanup, Capel, Bunbury and Mullalyup, this exhibition is inspired by the group’s common passion for printmaking and at the same time reveals each artist’s unique view of the world.

Introducing PAWA President 2009-2010 Sarah Robinson RC

September 8, 2009 at 1:09 pm (Member news)

Dear all members of the Printmakers Association of Western Australia, I have gladly accepted the role of President for the next exciting year. Since my recent emigration to Perth from Manchester I have been activity involved in engaging with Contemporary Arts practice in WA through visiting galleries and exhibitions and applying for artist residencies, and have also set up a studio at home.

I consider that my new role as President of PAWA is a unique opportunity at an important point of the association’s 35-year history. To focus WA Contemporary Fine Art Printmaking practice into a positive and supportive environment that emanates from the new studio facilities at the Tresillian Community Centre.

As a Fine Artist-Printmaker (who graduated from the Royal College of Art, in London), my work has explored the Human Body from a variety of contexts – be it from an anatomical, historical or most recently an architectural viewpoint. I became increasingly conscious of my own domestic activity within a confined space. This led me to consider the layout and occupation of domestic spaces applying ‘Space Syntax Theory’ and the ‘Configuration Analysis’ of houses.

By using blind etching and embossing and the subtle quality of line through drawing, etching and lithography I hoped to create simple but beautiful images that would reflect the nature of each space. A copper plate plaque installed on a wall, recorded all the jobs carried out in a single property, the immaculately polished surface the summation of all the dull jobs done again and again. This series of etchings, photo-etchings and light-boxes was exhibited as part of  ‘Episodic Realities’ at the John Moore’s School of Art and Design in 2007, and ‘Milieus in Focus’ most recently shown at Keighley Arts Factory, Yorkshire in November 2008.

I have recently been employed as a course leader for ‘Artlab’ an open access Printmaking Studio at the University of Central Lancashire, printmaking technician and lecturer and have a wide experience of running artist led workshops. I will be putting further details and images on the PAWA website soon and strongly encourage all members to consider contributing their details and images onto the site as  it provides a strong visual statement of who we are.

I would be grateful for any feedback from members on anything that they would like to include in the agenda for the next committee meeting, for example skills you would like to have disseminated through workshops, ideas for exhibitions/collaborations etc   and how best we can support your membership of the Printmaking Association of Western Australia.

Printmakers are now in their new studio

September 1, 2009 at 12:42 pm (Member news, PAWA Events)

Here 'tis

Here 'tis

Over the last three days, PAWA equipment has been sorted, shifted and then put into the new room at Tresillian. Since the move from Roe St., in 2006 it has been piled high in Jerry and Aloma’s garage for 2 years and before that in James Bryans’ garage for 1 year. We were ever hopeful of finding a new space and with a couple of false starts at last we have.

Shelley, Ruby, Hilda, Krissie, Rosemary, Jean, and Aloma have had muchos discussions? Grunted, sworn (occasionally), unpacked and pulled that pile down to a manageable size and ruthlessly binned, (with some exceptions! there’s always the bower birds!) ready for the shift.

The extra muscle came along on Sunday for the final effort, Mark and son Thomas, Mike, Hilbrand, Jerry and my son Gavin. They worked like Trojans to get everything packed onto trailers and tied. Three large trailers, and many car boots filled to the brim convoyed down to Nedlands from Wanneroo.

At Tresillian we were greeted by Susanne and a new member Sarah who came along. More grunting … and more binning too when we discovered the room was not quite that big so a few local studio donations were made.

Priorities...

Priorities...

More coffee and biscuits and a few more discussions and at last we are installed in the new space.

I would like to thank everyone for their hard work, their good company, the laughs we had on the day, and their support for what was a difficult task. And with a very special HUGE thank you to our partners and families who worked so hard so that we can enjoy our art.
Where would we be without them? PAWA is lucky to have such a great bunch of people.
